A dirty air filter will not only affect your engine’s performance but also your fuel economy. This filter, along with the two or three other filters in your automobile, needs to be changed when your vehicle manufacturer recommends it. Eddie’s Auto Repair can change your automotive filters for you. We are going to talk about each filter below and the general recommendation for when it needs to be changed. It’s important to keep in mind these mileage milestones are general, and your vehicle’s manufacturer may want you to change the filters at a different time. Your owner’s manual has this information.
Air
The engine air filter purifies the air before it goes to the combustion chamber to be used for engine combustion. This filter needs to be changed annually. If you drive more than 12,000 miles in less than a year, you need to change the filter every 12,000 miles. As we mentioned above, a clogged or dirty air filter will affect your engine’s performance and fuel economy.
Cabin
Some vehicles have a cabin air filter that works a lot like your furnace filter in your home. This filter purifies the air that blows through the vents into the passenger cabin. The range for changing this filter is anywhere from every 6,000 miles to 30,000 miles. It’s best to check your owner’s manual to see if you have a cabin air filter and, if you do, to see when the manufacturer recommends that you change it. If you feel sick when you drive your automobile, this is a sign that your cabin air filter is dirty.
Fuel
The fuel filter is crucial. It’s so important, in fact, that it purifies your diesel fuel or gasoline twice. The fuel filter needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. If you do not drive 30,000 miles in two years, the fuel filter needs to be changed every two years. A clogged fuel filter will prevent fuel from making its way into the engine. If the filter is severely clogged, you may not be able to get your automobile started.
Oil
The oil filter is changed during an oil change. As such, your car gets a new oil filter every 3,000 miles. A clogged oil filter can prevent oil from circulating through your engine and this will not only cause your engine to overheat but also severely damage it.
