Transmission Fluid Changes Color Throughout Its Life Stages

The transmission fluid is so important to the transmission. Just like motor oil, the transmission fluid protects the transmission from wear, tear, and overheating. It also helps to keep the transmission parts clean. Eddie’s Auto Repair advises that transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles as a general rule of thumb. One way to tell whether the transmission fluid is overdue for changing is to look at its color. Transmission fluid changes color from its original color as it gets old.

Bright Red

Transmission fluid should always be bright red. This means it is new, hasn’t oxidized, and is in excellent condition. The fluid should also be translucent. If your transmission fluid is red, it doesn’t need to be changed at this time. Aside from the color of the fluid, how your transmission performs is also an indication of the health of the fluid. If your gear shifts are smooth and effortless, the fluid should be fine.

Light Brown

Transmission fluid that is light brown or orangish is also in good shape. This color means the fluid is aging, but it is also still doing its job of protecting the transmission. Your gear shifts should still be smooth and seamless. You shouldn’t hear any strange sounds coming from the transmission or notice any gear-changing difficulties. You can wait to have the fluid changed if it is light brown and translucent.

Brown/Dark Brown

Once the transmission fluid turns brown, you need to change it right away. As we mentioned above, this is usually at about 30,000 miles. The reason why the transmission fluid’s color is darkening is that it is oxidizing. Oxidation fills the fluid with tiny air bubbles that prevent it from doing its job. You might also notice that your transmission’s gear shifts are rougher than normal and louder, too.

Black

If you fail to change the transmission fluid when is brown or dark brown, it will eventually turn black. Aside from damaging your transmission because the fluid has oxidized completely and is filled with dirt, you will also begin to have transmission problems, such as overheating, gear-shifting failure, and difficulty getting the transmission to go into gear.

Pink

Finally, as an aside, we hope you never end up with pink transmission fluid. When the transmission fluid turns pink, it is being diluted by engine coolant. This is a sign that you have serious damage between the transmission and cooling system that needs immediate attention.
