What Are These Spots On My Garage Floor?

You see spots on your garage floor as you back out, and your blood turns to ice. What are the spots and what is leaking from your car? Eddie’s Auto Repair advises that you have good reason to be concerned. In some cases, it’s not safe to drive your automobile depending on what is leaking out of it.

Blue

Grab a paper towel and sop up some of the fluid. Hold the paper towel to the light. If the fluid is blue, it could be your engine’s antifreeze but it is more likely the windshield washing solution leaking from its reservoir or lines. You can drive your automobile if it’s leaking windshield wash.

Brown

Light brown to dark brown fluid generally means you probably should not drive your car, truck, or utility vehicle. This fluid could be brake fluid or motor oil, but it could also be gear oil or dirty transmission fluid. Any of these leaks can cause engine trouble and leaking brake fluid can make it difficult to stop your car.

Green

Green fluid is most likely engine coolant or antifreeze. In fact, that is the only automotive fluid that is color green generally. Leaking engine coolant will make your car overheat, so it’s important to check the coolant levels before you try to drive your car. This being said, if there is a puddle on the garage floor, don’t drive your car at all.

Green-Blue

Greenish-blue fluid is also coolant or antifreeze. Again, if there is a puddle on your garage floor, it’s likely not safe to drive your automobile.

Orange

Orange fluid generally means that your radiator has rust in the bottom of it and this rust has eaten through the metal surfaces. The reason why the fluid is orange that there is rust in it. You can’t drive your car with a hole in the radiator.

Pink

You also can’t drive your car if pink fluid is puddling on your garage floor. Pink fluid is a sign that you have a serious leak between your cooling system and transmission. The pink tone to the fluid is red transmission fluid that is diluted by radiator coolant.

Red

So now you know that transmission fluid is red. The power steering fluid is also red. In some cases, brake fluid might be red, and there are many engine coolants out there that are also red.

Yellow
