Which Oil Should I Choose for My Car?

With the different oil types and all of the hoopla surrounding them, it can be difficult to choose the best oil for your car, truck, or utility vehicle. Eddie’s Auto Repair advises that the best place to start is at your owner’s manual. Check to see the type of oil and weight recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer and use that oil in the engine. We are going to talk about the oil types below to give you a better idea of when it might be a good idea to change the oil type that you use in your automobile.

Conventional

Tried, true, and reliable for over 100 years, conventional motor oil is the most popular oil on the market. Most vehicles run on conventional oil without any problems. This is the oil that gets changed every 3,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. This is the oil that is most likely in your automobile. Conventional motor oil does an excellent job of protecting low-mileage, standard engines. It is affordable, reliable, and, as mentioned above, has a history that dates back over 100 years.

High-Mileage

There will come a time when it would be a good idea to switch to high-mileage motor oil for your vehicle’s engine. This time is 75,000 miles or more. The older an engine gets the more chance it has of springing an oil leak. When this happens, the low oil levels can damage the engine. High-mileage motor oil has additives in it to prevent older engines from developing oil leaks. If you drive an older automobile and are using conventional motor oil, consider switching to high-mileage motor oil.

Synthetic

We mentioned hoopla in the introduction to this blog post, and a lot of hoopla is around synthetic motor oil. This man-made wonder contains additives that are designed to make the oil last longer and to protect and engine better. Some vehicle manufacturers, such as BMW, recommend synthetic oil only for their engines. Synthetic is a good choice for high-performance engines or vehicles that operate in extreme climates with freezing winters and scorching summers.

Synthetic Blend

You may not need a full synthetic oil but you may want some of the benefits of synthetic oil. In this case, you can opt for a synthetic blend that will allow you to have the benefits of synthetic motor oil mixed with the cost-effectiveness of conventional motor oil.
